While few similar products yet exist due to the fact that musicians didn't need a device like this in the past, there have been models made, such as the Windsorb, shown to the right. While this is a decent design and hits many of the requirements for our product, it lacks in the fact that it's designed solely for a trumpet. A trombone involves the extra challenges of having the valve at arm's length from the player, and as it's attached to the slide, must be able to move at fast speeds without spilling any liquid.

Current Design Improvements & Specific Design Considerations for a Trombone:

  1. A lid is required to contain the spit from falling out as it moves at high speeds with the slide. This lid must lock into place without falling off while still being detachable for easy cleaning.

  2. The Windsorb allows for 3-5 hours of playing, but this design aimed to improve this by using reusable inserts that can be swapped out once for one another.

  3. Easy use around the lid is a must at arm's length.

  4. The Windsorb's reccommended method of cleaning is running it through cold water, but for proper sterilization, heat should be used between sessions, such as steam from a dishwasher. Incorporating features of the Healthmark Plastic Sterilizing Baskets will allow for more effective disinfection.

Attachment System:

The final attachment system decided upon came from a combination of two features: the open-style plastic pipe clip like the Maxline M8064, and the GoPro general security system shown below. While many different types of pipe clips and attachments exist, combining these two products into one custom design allows for easy attachment and a strong hold.
